Macrovascular disease (MVD) is the most prevalent complication amongst diabetics in the west. Almost 2/3 of deaths in diabetics is due to coronary artery disease (CAD), cerebrovascular disease (CVD) or peripheral vascular disease (PVD). The situation has worsen in the post insulin era due to control over acute complications and infections in diabetics. The problem although more marked with Type-2 diabetics is also a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Type-1 diabetics, therefore the American Heart Association has designated Diabetes Mellitus (DM) as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
